Process Development Engineer - Biotech
Process Development Engineer at Generare : scale biotech processes from R&D to production, improve robustness and efficiency, and partner across teams to unlock nature’s molecular library.
About Generare
At Generare, we’re reopening one of humanity’s most powerful sources of innovation: the natural evolved chemistry of microbes. We’ve built a discovery engine that blends synthetic biology, computational biology, and automation to explore the vast 97% of microbial natural products that remain undiscovered, and to turn that hidden diversity into a rapidly growing library of truly novel bioactive molecules. The platform is already running at industrial scale, revealing new scaffolds and modes of action faster than any other approach, and unlocking fresh routes to tackle antimicrobial resistance, cancer, parasitic diseases, and major agricultural needs.
Generare was created in 2023 from the landmark work of Dr. Vincent Libis and is scaling fast. We’re 20 brilliant people in the heart of Paris today, growing rapidly next year, and building the team that will bring nature’s molecular library to the next wave of medicines and sustainable crop protection.
Role Overview
We are looking for an engineer to oversee the development and scale-up of our molecular biology and microbiology processes, as well as their continuous improvement. The role sits at the interface between R&D and production : it involves supporting protocols from the proof-of-concept stage in research through to their stable, robust and high-performance implementation within our production team.
In practical terms, you will be the point of contact for process maturation: taking a protocol that works on a few samples, scaling it up to a level representative of our operational needs, making it more robust, and then handing it over to the production team.
Beyond scale-up, you will be a driving force behind the continuous improvement of the platform: identifying bottlenecks, measuring and optimising handling times, improving quality and reproducibility, and evolving our processes in line with the pipeline’s needs.
This role will require scientific rigour, organisational skills and autonomy. You will be expected to manage your projects from start to finish, structure your approach, and take a step back to assess what is worth scaling up.
You will therefore work closely with R&D and within our Production team.
Key Responsibilities
Process development and scale-up
Take over processes from the research team following proof of concept and lead their development phase through to a scale representative of our business.
Identify and control sources of variability, and ensure the reliability of critical steps to establish a stable and transferable protocol
Contribute to trade-offs between quality, time and robustness
Transfer and training
Help formalise processes in the form of finalised and documented protocols
Facilitate the transfer of protocols to the production team
Maintain active dialogue with R&D upstream and the production team downstream, ensuring the handover takes place in a spirit of co-construction
Production and continuous improvement
Master all pipeline techniques and routinely execute protocols within the production team
Become a key point of reference for handling times, monitoring performance indicators and identifying bottlenecks
Propose and implement optimisations for the continuous improvement of processes (quality, robustness, time, ergonomics) on an ongoing basis, in collaboration with the production team.
Project monitoring and reporting
Structure your approach, organise your projects and meet deadlines.
Provide regular reports on progress, risks and key decisions.
Profile
We would be delighted to hear from an engineer (with a bachelor’s or master’s degree, from an engineering school or a postgraduate programme) specialising in biotechnology, biological engineering, microbiology or a related field, ideally with 2–4 years’ experience in the biotech, pharmaceutical or industrial R&D sectors.
More than just skills ticked off a list, it is above all a mindset and a working attitude that will make the difference :
Curiosity, energy and genuine autonomy in organising your own schedule.
A keen interest in scale-up, process optimisation and performance
A strong sense of organisation, project management and reporting
A marked scientific and operational rigour, with a preference for well-documented and reproducible work.
Very good practical mastery of technical procedures in microbiology and molecular biology
Fluency in both written and spoken French and English, and a passion for cross-team communication and training.
Why join us?
Joining Generare means helping to shape a new model for molecular discovery, where scientific innovation meets operational rigour. It also means becoming part of a passionate, interdisciplinary team that is pushing the boundaries of natural product chemistry.
In this role in particular, you will play a pivotal role at a crucial stage for the platform: its transition from R&D to industrial-scale operations. Your work will have a direct and visible impact on the reproducibility, traceability and performance of a high-potential platform and, more broadly, on Generare’s ability to deliver.
